The Goodness Metric

We believe that goodness isn't just a value, it's a measurable force for change

At The Do Good Charity, we believe that doing good is a force for change. That’s why we’ve created The Goodness Metric®, a pioneering impact measurement tool built for charities.

The Goodness Metric® is a structured framework for charities to measure and articulate their social impact effectively. It bridges practitioner insights with academic rigour to create a compelling account of social impact - showing funders, commissioners and partners how charity work contributes to wider national and global goals.

Alongside this, The Goodness Metric helps charities understand the conditions needed for effective impact measurement, and strategic recommendation to achieve this.

Developed jointly by The Do Good Charity and Nottingham Trent University, and funded by a £240k Innovate UK grant, The Goodness Metric draws on social value measurement, ethnographic research with people-supporting charities, and national and global outcome frameworks.

Charities create change every day. The Goodness Metric® helps charities prove it, explain it and use it.

From local action to wider social progress

Charities often know the difference they make but can find it difficult to express that contribution in the language used by funders, commissioners, policymakers and corporate partners.

The Goodness Metric solves this by:

Revealing Impact: Bring together the outcomes, evidence and insight that show where a charity creates change.
Building Confidence: Assessing which claims are well supported, where evidence can be strengthened and what to prioritise to show impact.
Making The Connection: Show how your work contributes to recognised national and global goals clearly, credibly and without overstating attribution.

Examples of wider goals and frameworks

National examples

  • UK National Well-being Framework - including relationships and health
  • Scottish National Performance Framework - wider social, economic and environmental outcomes
  • Relevant national strategies and outcome frameworks for the charity’s field

Global examples

  • United Nations UN Sustainable Development Goals
  • OECD Well-being Framework and Better Life Index
  • Social Progress Imperative, World Happiness Report, Multidimensional Poverty Index and Global Social Mobility Index

How it works

The Goodness Metric® is now at the heart of our consultancy offer. Whether you're a large charity, a grant-making body, or a corporate funder, The Goodness Metric® will help you:

  1. Reflect on your purpose: understand the alignment of purpose with activities and outcomes so that areas of impact can be explored. We use guided workshops to map current activities to strategy both past and present.
  2. Tell stories of Good: explore the data you have and align this to Global Indicators of impact. Using co-designed sessions, we help you understand the data you collect, map this to global indicators, and tell your stories of Good.
  3. Plan your development: After steps 1 and 2 we help you ask, what next? Through layering and reflecting on ESG criteria we help you plan development of the activities so that more impact can be planned.

Our consultancy packages are tailored to your needs, ensuring that The Goodness Metric® works for you - not the other way around.

The best thing is that by using our consultancy, the income we receive helps us provide more help to more people and tell more stories of good.

Together, we can shape a future where every act of goodness is counted, valued, and amplified.
